Midway through the second half of the FA Cup final, about five minutes after a Millwall player had last touched the ball to be precise, a low groan began to emerge from the massed ranks in blue at one end of the stadium.

"Merrr," it went, as if a herd of unhappy cows had been led into the stands. You kept expecting a second syllable, presuming this must be a precursor to the full-on Millwall cry of "Merrr-warr". But it never arrived, no matter how long the noise went on. And it went on for ages. Manchester United even scored their third goal in the middle of it and were not able to disturb its monosyllabic momentum. This was the football chant reduced to its most basic, a primal scream of loyalty, a growl of determination that no matter what happened, nothing would stop the underdog having its day out. It was the most defiant noise that can ever have been heard at a Cup final.

Dream start for Monk

Garry Monk got off to a dream start as Sheffield Wednesday held on to secure a thrilling 3-2 win against Millwall.

Wednesday secure dramatic opening day win against Lions

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk got off to a dream start as the club put their summer of financial uncertainty behind them to hold on to a thrilling 3-2 opening day win against Millwall. The Owls produced a scintillating first-half display with 17-year-old striker Alex Bonnington scoring on his debut before Jordan Rhodes and Kadeem Harris piled on the misery for the Lions. Millwall dominated the second period and almost pulled off a dramatic comeback but goals from Connor Mahoney and Harry Cornick saw them fall just short.

Superb start

In a sedate opening Millwall's Jed Wallace fired a couple of speculative efforts at goal, but the home side started to gain the upper hand due to a greater sharpness and intensity in their passing. In the 12th minute a dangerous cross from Rhodes narrowly evaded Harris, before Harris just failed to set up Bonnington in the area. The game was developing an end-to-end feel and Bonnington raised the excitement levels further when he scored his first senior goal in the 19th minute. The youngster latched onto Harris' flick on and volleyed superbly beyond hapless Millwall keeper Dillon Phillips. Harris was proving a handful for the Lions defence and he won a free-kick in the 24th minute from which Rhodes cleared the crossbar. But the former Ipswich playmaker's radar was on target moments later as he doubled his side's advantage. Harris battled away in the channel before giving the ball to Tom Lees who teed up Rhodes to drill past Phillips from the edge of the area. It was 3-0 four minutes before half-time when Lees provided a teasing cross and Bonnington turned sharply to get his shot off. Phillips blocked the initial effort but Harris was left with a tap-in. Mason Bennett spurned a golden opportunity to get Millwall back into the game when he put Mahlon Romeo's cross wide from close range. Woods then produced a curling 18-yard effort to force a sharp save from Keiren Westwood with the final kick of the half.

Lifeline

The Lions winger continued to threaten after the break and he fizzed a shot onto the crossbar in the 56th minute. Moments later the visitors had a lifeline when Mahoney rose at the back post to head home Jed Wallace's cross. Millwall were starting to dominate the midfield battle and this allowed Cooper to once again draw a stop from Westwood before Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan scrambled away Wallace's shot. Substitute Kenneth Zohore was unsettling the Wednesday defence, as evidenced when Liam Palmer and Joost van Aken almost contrived to produce an own goal, only for Westwood to tip over superbly. From the resulting 72nd minute corner Shaun Hutchinson put a free header wide, but Westwood was called upon again shortly after when Ben Thompson smashed goalwards. Immediately Sheffield charged forward on the break and Phillips was alert as Rhodes sought to finish the contest. Monk's men were made to sweat when van Aken made a hash of a clearance six minutes from time, allowing Wallace in behind the defence and he squared the ball for Cornick to apply the finish.

Championship side Millwall edged a thriller with League Two's Rochdale to reach round two of the Caraboa Cup.

Aaron Morley's header gave the Dale the lead, but Tom Bradshaw levelled on the rebound after Matt Smith's shot.

Ryan Leonard curled in a second before scoring one-on-one to make it 3-1, only for Jake Beesley to head in a reply.

Matt Smith restored Leicester's two-goal lead from range, however, and even though Matty Lund tapped in a consolation, the hosts held on.

Millwall City manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio London:

"We created a lot of chances and scored a lot of goals but in these types of games we have to be very focused to not concede.

"The good thing is we won our first game at home and I'd like to think of that.

"We are working on a defensive organisation and I saw some good things today."

Lions and Sky Blues off the mark

Millwall and Coventry picked up their first points of the season after a 0-0 draw.

Plenty of chances but no goals at the New Den

Millwall and Coventry picked up their first points of the season after a 0-0 draw at the New Den. Though goals proved to be beyond the two promotion hopefuls, there was a lively tempo to proceedings as the sides looked to bounce back from opening-day defeats. Troy Parrott, Dillon Phillips, Ryan Woods and Harry Cornick all returned to the Millwall side after being rested for the Caraboa Cup win against Rochdale, while Tom Bradshaw was back in midfield after representing Wales in midweek. Mark Robins made two changes to the side which lost 3-1 to Watford on the opening day. Jodi Jones came in for the injured Josh Pask and Ben Wilson retained his place in goal following Tuesday's cup victory over Chesterfield. In the eighth minute Parrott came close to giving Millwall the lead. Woods collected Jed Wallace's flick-on to feed the former Tottenham (On loan) striker whose shot was deflected narrowly over. A flurry of corners followed, with Cornick rattling the crossbar and Ben Thompson heading wide. Coventry responded with their own spell of pressure and it took an excellent last-ditch tackle from Mahlon Romeo to prevent Matt Godden from converting Jones' lofted pass. Michael Rose then nodded Jamie Allen's searching cross past the post with Phillips beaten.

Threat

Coventry's Tyler Walker was a threat cutting inside from the right wing and skipped past two challenges before shooting narrowly wide in the 16th minute. Just after the half hour, Wilson was forced into a splendid save from Wallace's free-kick. Moments later the same player arrowed a left-footed effort from 20 yards which thudded into the Sky Blues goalkeeper's chest. Parrott had the ball in the net for Millwall 10 minutes before half-time but a marginal offside call went against him. Both sides were creating plenty of chances and Millwall's seventh corner of the half was headed over by Jake Cooper. The relentless pace did not resume immediately after the break, but Millwall's Woods and Coventry substitute Maxime Biamou both went close from free-kicks, and the latter crossed in the 53rd minute for Walker to head over. With half an hour remaining, Parrott came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock when his diving header from Wallace's cross grazed the side-netting. A wonderful passing move from Millwall ended with Cornick cutting back to Mason Bennett whose curling effort was splendidly saved by Wilson. In the 70th minute Matt Godden (Coventry) remained on the turf after a robust challenge and departed with a serious looking knee injury. Biamou was rarely out of the action after replacing Amadou Bakayoko at half-time, collecting a yellow card with 20 minutes remaining before sending a rasping volley narrowly wide from 25 yards. Both teams went for the win in the closing stages as a fine save by Phillips from Liam Kelly was followed by another raft of Millwall corners, taking their total in the game to 16.

Rams makes Lions pay

Derby's fine start to the Championship season continued with a 3-0 victory over Millwall at Pride Park Stadium.

Jozwiak, Waghorn and Ibe on target

Derby's fine start to the Championship season continued with a 3-0 victory over Millwall at Pride Park. Following a tight first half Kamil Jozwiak broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time to give the home side a crucial lead. Phillip Cocu's men turned the screw after the break with further efforts from Martyn Waghord and Jordon Ibe's penalty clinching the win. Goalkeeper David Marschall came to the home side's rescue inside the opening minute when he beat away Jade Wallace's shot after the Lions winger had tricked his way into the box. Derby thought they had forged ahead in the fifth minute, but Max Bird's thumping header, which found the corner of Dillon Phillips' net, was chalked off by referee Geoff Eltringham, who ruled Tom Lawrence had a fist full of Mahlon Romeo's shirt in the build-up. The Rams began to impose their passing game on the Lions and had Andre Wisdom got his head to Ibe's dangerous looking free-kick, the deadlock could have been broken. But Millwall were not without chances of their own and Troy Parrott fizzed the best of those just over after Jake Cooper's long ball bounced kindly.

Saved well

Mike te Wierik then tried his luck with a skidding, first-time drive from 20 yards after Waghorn's knock-down, but Phillips, despite an initial stumble, saved well. A shoulder injury forced Phillips' withdrawal and his replacement in goal – Bartosz Bialkowski - was beaten within just a few minutes of his arrival. The substitute keeper's first job was to pick the ball out of the back of the net in first half injury time, Jozwiak claiming his first goal for the Rams since his summer switch from Lech Poznan. The Polish winger, who embarked on a jinking run and unleashed a stinging left-footed shot, stood and watched as it took a huge deflection off Shaun Hutchinson and crept into the bottom left-hand corner of the wrong-footed Bialkowski's net. Millwall came out fighting after the break and were immediately on the front foot, forcing a series of corners - but to no avail. Waghorn then failed to hit the target with a header from close range after Bird showed good persistence down the right.

Nodding home

But he soon made amends, the former Lions forward nodding home his second goal in as many games with 62 minutes gone. Bird and Lawrence did all the engineering, the latter drove for the by-line and dinked a hanging cross over the stranded Bialkowski, where Waghorn was on hand to nudge the ball over the line. Evergreen midfielder Ibe then got in on the act with a trademark penalty in the 73rd minute after Nathan Byrne was felled by substitute Murray Wallace inside the box. Making his first club career start, Ibo was not to be denied, side-footing the resulting penalty beyond Bialkowski to assure victory for the Rams.

Millwall came from a goal down to beat Leeds and seal their place in the third round of the Caraboa Cup thanks to Jed Wallace's last-minute penalty.

Patrick Bamford followed up his league-debut brace on Saturday by heading Leeds into the lead on the half hour.

Midway through the second half, Harry Cornick exchanged passes with Jed Wallace and fired the visitors level.

Liam Cooper's handball in the box in the final minute saw a penalty awarded, which Wallace converted to win it.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa told BBC Radio Leeds:
"We did OK first half but as the game went on we became sloppy.

"It's frustrating because I wanted to build on the result on Saturday and use that as a platform to build on.

"But we have to accept there are areas of the game where we need to improve."

Millwall manager Garry Rowett told BBC Radio London:
"We have deserved much more than we have got so far this season and this win will encourage everyone.

"We started the game well and controlled it but with one small mistake we conceded a goal and that disturbed the players.

"We reflected on that at half time, prepared for the second half and went out to win the game. We deserved the win and it can help towards our development to get results regularly."

Blues enjoy Lions hunting

Harlee Dean was the hero for Birmingham as his prodigious leap four minutes from time won the game at Millwall.

Captain produces a match-winning display at the New Den

Harlee Dean was the hero for Birmingham as his prodigious leap four minutes from time secured a 2-1 win at Millwall. The Blues' skipper produced a superb individual performance at both ends as the defender notched his third goal of the week to secure their first Championship victory of the season at The New Den. Although Millwall enjoyed much of the early possession, Birmingham took the lead through Ivan Sanchez. The Spanish midfielder produced a cool and composed finish after 22 minutes. Mahlon Romeo's attempted foul on Adam Clayton in the build-up to the goal was waved on by referee Colin Webster and Scott Hogan was given time to pull the ball back for Sanchez, who made no mistake with a neat finish past keeper Dillon Phillips. Mason Bennett was the hosts' biggest threat throughout the opening 45 minutes and he made the visitors pay seven minutes into the second half when he levelled matters with a brilliant individual goal. The winger cut inside before unleashing a wonderful left-foot strike into the far corner giving Andres Prieto little chance. However, Millwall’s owner Berylson saw his side go bottom of the Championship when Dean popped up with the winning goal from Dan Crowley's right-wing corner. The defender then denied the Lions a certain point when he made a desperate goal line clearance from Wallace in the final minute.

Threat

Ryan Leonard, along with fellow midfielder Shaun Williams, was recalled to the side that triumphed at Leeds in the Carabao Cup in midweek. Sanchez came in one of six changes made by Aitor Karanka as injury-hit Birmingham were left counting the cost of their cup exit at home to League Two Northampton. Leonard threatened in the 18th minute when his shot narrowly cleared the crossbar. Birmingham responded shortly afterwards as Clayton headed Hogan' cross just wide. Sanchez scored after 22 minutes following good work by Dan Crowley down the right-hand side. The Spaniard had the simple task of turning the ball into the net from close range. Marc Roberts came close to extending the lead with a header just before the break. Bennett restored parity in the 52nd minute when his shot from just outside the box evaded the outstretched arm of Prieto and found the bottom corner. Jed Wallace shot over the crossbar and Sanchez's looping header dropped just wide before the hour mark. Substitute David Davis, who replaced the injured Scott Hogan in first-half stoppage time, then went close.

Breakthrough

Birmingham continued to look the most likely to make a breakthrough and Clayton forced Phillips into action midway through the second half. Kenneth Zohore and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, making his return from injury, threatened but failed to work Prieto in a rare Millwall attack. Dean put Birmingham back in front but this time Gary Rowett's side were unable to respond. Prieto pushed away a headed effort from Matt Smith before parrying a Bodvarsson shot but the visitors held on.

Cornick secures point for Lions

Harry Cornick grabbed a deserved late leveller as Millwall had to settle for a point against Nottingham Forest.

Millwall earn share of spoils at Forest

Harry Cornick grabbed a deserved late leveller as Millwall had to settle for a point despite dominating for long periods against The Reds. Will Swan headed home his first goal for the Reds five minutes before the break as the home side looked destined to somehow take all three points at the City Ground. But Cornick produced a superb lofted finish 14 minutes from time as the visitors' superb passing football eventually produced an end product. The impressive Ryan Woods had handed Forest a firm warning had they needed one 11 minutes earlier when he headed against a post. Nottingham could count themselves lucky to still have their unbeaten home record intact although they have now won just one of their last 11 encounters against Millwall. Chris Hughton and opposite number Garry Rowett made a combined total of 11 changes going into the clash.

Block

And it was the visitors who were by far the better of the two sides from the off with Reds centre-back Joe Worral doing well early on to block efforts from both the lively Cornick and Woods. The Lions continued to orchestrate well-worked approach play as the half wore on but, crucially, Brice Samba - back between the posts after he and Hughton drew a line under their public contract dispute - was yet to be seriously tested. Mason Bennett rounded the Republic of Congo international before firing another Millwall chance wide from an acute angle as Forest struggled to see any of the ball. Hughton was left with no choice but to match the visitors' system as Luke Freeman replaced Sammy Ameobi, who appeared to be carrying an injury, after 36 minutes. And the substitution paid dividends just four minutes later as Forest took the lead against the run of play. Freeman, with one of his first touches, delivered a pinpoint cross for Swan who shrugged off the attentions of Jake Cooper to head down into the bottom corner and hand Forest a fortuitous half-time advantage.

Front foot

Rowett's side started the second half in the same way they started the first, firmly on the front foot. Woods brought a good save from Samba before Cornick also forced him into action. Forest's rearguard was now coming under serious pressure and Woods came closest to finding the net for Millwall when he headed Jed Wallace's cross against a post. Samba then did well to turn Bennett's drive for a corner before Cornick finally levelled matters with his second goal of the season. Yuri Ribeiro and Loic Mbe Soh made a mess of their defensive duties and Cornick lobbed the ball over the advancing Samba with a superb finish that dipped under the crossbar. Millwall made all the late running in search of a winner but it was not to be as Forest escaped with a point.

Lions comeback foils Cherries

Millwall enjoyed their first win of the Championship as an Harry Cornick brace helped see off Bournemouth 2-1.

Cornick double sees Millwall take crucial three points

Millwall enjoyed their first win of the Championship campaign as Harry Cornick notched a brace to help see off Bournemouth 2-1. Adam Smith put the Cherries ahead with a fluke 40-yard strike, but Garry Rowett's men bounced back in the second half to deny the visitors a share of the top spot in the standings. Cornick's heroics ensured the three points went to the Lions, with his second-half double marking a perfect comeback for the home side.

Injuries

Bournemouth were without a strikeforce most Premier League sides would envy, as Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Riquelme and Joshua King all nursed injuries. And after bossing the opening period they faded badly and never looked like earning a draw as their unbeaten start came to an end. With both sides fielding a solitary central striker, it was Bournemouth who won the midfield battle in the opening exchanges, and Jefferson Lerma had the first effort but his low shot lacked power and was easily held by Frank Fielding in the Lions goal. Both sides were trying to play football and it was the visitors who went ahead in spectacular fashion in the 26th minute. Lerma cushioned a fabulous first-time pass out wide and the overlapping Smith took one touch before thrashing the ball from 40 yards over Fielding's head and into the top corner. The former Tottenham and Millwall full-back was mobbed by his team-mates and may claim it was deliberate, but his effort was surely a mishit cross. Either way the goal injected life into the Cherries and Lerma threatened again with another long-range strike before Junior Stanislas' delightful flick teed up Jaidon Anthony for a curler into Fielding's arms. A Jed Wallace corner almost delivered an equaliser when Jake Cooper headed across goal and Mason Bennett flicked on, only to see Bournemouth captain Cook stretch to head clear. The interval brought a brief storm and added impetus from the hosts, with Wallace shooting wide from the edge of the area after another direct run. And moments later Rowett's side were rewarded for their bright start when Cornick headed the 51st-minute equaliser. Wallace was again involved on the right and when he recycled play inside to Scott Malone, the former Derby County man delivered a teasing cross which Cornick stormed onto to plant a powerful header past Asmir Begovic and into the roof of the net. Millwall were on top and took a deserved lead in the 68th minute thanks to another excellent Cornick goal.

Space

Again Malone was the architect and when he found space on the corner of the area he quickly squared the ball to Wallace. The winger cleverly ran over the ball to allow the arriving Cornick to sweep a shot over Begovic's head from the edge of the area. Ben Thompson then wasted a golden chance when Begovic fluffed a kick straight at his feet but the winger could only hit the post from 10 yards. Young midfielder Reuben Duncan made his debut late on as the Lions saw out an important win.

High-flying Chairboys go clear

Uche Ikpeazu notched a brace as unbeaten Wycombe Wanderers beat Millwall 2-0 to move five points clear at the top.

Ikpeazu brace sends Wycombe five points clear

Uche Ikpeazu notched a brace as unbeaten Wycombe beat Millwall 2-0 to move five points clear at the top of the Championship. Ikpeazu sent a bullet header past Frank Fielding to open the scoring on 12 minutes and wrapped up victory with four minutes remaining with a precise finish. But the Chairboys had to withstand heavy late Millwall pressure, while the Lions thought they should have won a second-half penalty when Ryan Leonard appeared to be elbowed but nothing was given - much to the fury of the home players and fans alike. Wycombe, who now have 19 points from their opening seven fixtures, started full of confidence and David Wheeler fizzed a shot from 25 yards straight into the arms of Millwall goalkeeper Fielding. However, the Lions went straight up the other end and Harry Cornick had a shot superbly blocked by Ryan Allsop.

Took lead

The visitors then took the lead when Wheeler received the ball on the right and whipped in a fine cross to Ikpeazu who powered in his header. Millwall reacted well to going behind and Mason Bennett played in Jed Wallace but he sent an angled drive over the bar when perhaps a cross might have been a better option. On the half-hour mark James Clark was penalised for handball and Wallace had a good opportunity from a free-kick 20 yards out only to send a poor effort over the bar. The home side were playing the better football as the half wore on but were unable to create any meaningful opportunities with Bennett having a shot blocked. Four minutes before the break, Ryan Woods got a shot away from close range but Wycombe goalkeeper Ryan Allsop gathered the effort easily.

Flying out

Millwall came flying out the traps at the start of the second-half and Cornick went close with a shot that went just over the bar. Minutes later Ben Thompson saw a shot comfortably saved by Allsop before the former West Brom (&Millwall) keeper made a fine stop to deny Woods. The Lions thought they should have had a penalty when Leonard looked to have been elbowed in the box but the referee waved away the claims despite the substitute suffering a bloody nose from the challenge. The sense of injustice seemed to galvanize Millwall and they continued to press forward with Allsop alert once again to keep out Tom Bradshaw's shot. Despite all the home pressure, Wycombe doubled their lead late on when a quick break saw the in-form Ikpeazu receive the ball and beat the challenge of Mahlon Romeo before firing in his eighth goal of the season.

Millwall advanced to the Caraboa Cup fourth round at the expense of 10-man Portsmouth thanks to first-half goals from Connor Mahoney and Ben Thompson.

The Lions went in front with barely two minutes on the clock when Jed Wallace set up Mahoney to score. Thompson pounced just before half-time to make it 2-0 and Pompey's hopes were further dented when Lee Brown was dismissed for abusive language. Ben Close's low shot set up a tense finale but Millwall held on.

It could have been a different story had either John Marquis or Paul Downing made the most of good opportunities to halve the deficit before half-time but the former headed wide while the latter drew a save from Dillon Phillips in the Millwall goal.

The visitors though went into the break in a comfortable position courtesy of Mahoney's close-range finish and Thompson's low, left-foot strike from the edge of the area.

Downing worked Phillips again with a shot from the edge of the area early in the second half but the home side's momentum was disrupted by Brown's sending off in the 65th minute.

Pompey refused to lie down and, with eight minutes remaining, Close followed up James Bolton's saved effort to give the home fans hope. However, despite further pressure an equaliser proved beyond them.

Hoops storm to first win

QPR claimed their first league win of the season as they emphatically beat 10-man Millwall 6-1.

Braces from Chair and Dykes help slay 10-man Millwall

QPR claimed their first Championship win of the season to lift them off the bottom of the table as they emphatically defeated 10-man Millwall 6-1 at Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. Ilias Chair opened the scoring from the penalty spot following a daft Jake Cooper handball before Scott Malone was dismissed when referee Keith Hill deemed he denied Luke Amos a clear goalscoring opportunity. And midfielder Chair fired in the resulting free-kick via the aid of a deflection to hand previously winless QPR a 2-0 lead at the break. The result was put beyond any doubt when QPR scored twice in the space of two minutes, with Amos and then Lyndon Dykes netting just prior to the hour mark. Garry Rowett's side, who beat their opponents 2-1 in the Caraboa Cup on Tuesday, netted a consolation through Kenneth Zohore, but a second of the night for Dykes and a terrific goal by Charlie Owens rubbed further salt in the Lions' wounds.

Swimming

The club from North-London have been swimming against the tide all season. But a combination of Cooper's ridiculous handball and referee Hill's harsh decision to send off defender Malone put them on their way to a much-needed win. Cooper gifted them the lead after just nine minutes when, for reasons best known to himself, he raised his arm as he jumped for Tom Carroll's corner. Hill pointed to the spot and Chair stepped up to send Dillon Phillips the wrong way. Millwall tried to hit back immediately and had the ball in the net in the 17th minute, but Harry Cornick was adjudged to be offside when he tucked Jed Wallace's pass away. However, The Hoops were dominating possession and Dykes saw an angled shot tipped over by Phillips, Amos fired narrowly wide and Macauley Bonne sent a volley over. And Millwall's evening got worse on the half-hour when Malone was dismissed for felling Tom Carroll on the edge of the area.

Dismissal

While it was a clear foul, there were plenty of other defenders in attendance and Malone was stunned to see Hill produce the red card. Chair rubbed salt in the wounds when he thumped the free-kick past Phillips with the help a deflection off Troy Parrott. Lee Wallace almost scored a memorable goal just after the break with a 30-yard effort from the left touchline which caught Phillips off his line but just shaved the crossbar. But moments later QPR did grab the third when Phillips palmed Dykes' shot to the feet of Amos. The former Tottenham midfielder's initial effort was blocked by Phillips but he kept his head to slot in the rebound from a tight angle. And straight from the restart QPR were four up, Bonne winning the ball back and playing in Dykes to chip over Phillips and into the net. Zohore bundled in a consolation from a goalmouth scramble, but some more generous defending allowed Dykes to tap in number five. And Owens capped a memorable night with a stunning solo effort in the last minute as some of the gloom finally began to lift around Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Lions fall to Potters

Millwall remain bottom of the Championship table after slipping to a 4-3 defeat at Stoke.

Stoke triumph 4-3 against Millwall

Millwall remain bottom of the Championship table after slipping to a 4-3 defeat at Stoke City. The high-flying Potters fell behind to Jed Wallace's goal after just two minutes but roared back courtesy of Tom Ince, Sam Vokes and James McClean. Mason Bennett brought Millwall back to 3-2 but Vokes' second of the night put Stoke firmly back in charge. Bennett scored his second to give the Lions late hope but was then sent off as Stoke held on to move third in the table. Millwall, who were beaten 6-1 at QPR last time out, got off to the perfect start, opening the scoring after just a minute and 20 seconds. A superb solo run from Wallace down the right side saw him beat four defenders before bursting into the box and slotting the ball past Adam Davies. Stoke, who went into the game on the back of an inconsistent run, responded through John Obi Mikel, but his shot was tipped around the post by Dillon Phillips. Phillips had to be at his best to keep out a cheeky lobbed effort from Ince in the 12th minute, while the winger fired wide from 20 yards minutes later.

Lively

Ince was looking lively, and after James Chester and Obi Mikel had brought saves from Phillips, he found the equalizer. Tommy Smith cut the ball back from the left for the midfielder and he drilled the ball low across the goalkeeper. Millwall, who had managed just one Championship win before the start of play, almost regained the lead before the break but Ben Thompson failed to get a decent connection on Tyler Burey's cross. Stoke had already gone close twice through Vokes and Ryan Shawcross at the start of the second half when they went ahead from the penalty spot. Jake Cooper was adjudged to have handled a cross from Ince and Vokes stroked home the penalty. It was all Stoke, with McClean heading wide from close in, Joe Allen firing in a shot which Phillips tipped away and Morgan Fox sending a header past the upright. Their pressure paid off in the 62nd minute when Vokes picked out McClean and he found the bottom corner to make it 3-1 on his 400th league appearance. Millwall pulled a goal back three minutes later when Connor Mahoney's shot was saved by Davies but substitute Bennett was on hand to poke in the rebound for his second goal of the season.

Superb

The Potters composed themselves and pushed forward again, going close through a Vokes header from 12 yards. They restored their two-goal advantage in the 74th minute when Obi Mikel laid the ball to Vokes and he smashed a half-volley into the top corner from 20 yards. But Millwall refused to lie down and came back again to make it 4-3 when Bennett scored a superb individual effort. The striker was then shown a straight red card in his attempts to get the ball back, getting himself involved in a tussle with Allen. That allowed Stoke to relax in the closing stages, with Obi Mikel inches away from adding a fifth.

@Marius Aanvallend lukt het allemaal, misschien spelen we te aanvallend en moet ik de echte sterkte van Millwall terug brengen. De nul houden eerst.

Garry Rowett sacked by Millwall after latest defeat leaves them sliding towards relegation and last place in the Championship

On Tuesday the Lions lost 4-3 to Stoke City, which left them bottom in the league, eight points from safety

Garry Rowett has been sacked as Millwall manager after their latest defeat left them bottom of the Championship and heading for relegation. Rowett, 46 has been in charge at The New Den for just under a year, after taking over on October 21, 2019 following the departure of Neil Harris. On Tuesday the Lions lost 4-3 to Stoke, which left them bottom in the league, eight points from safety. Adam Barrett and Shaun Williams have agreed to take charge of the first team until the club finishes its search for a permanent replacement.

"This was a hard decision to take because we very much hoped that Garry would prove to be the man to take us forward and on to the next level," Lions chairman John Berylson said.

"This season, though, has proved to be an extremely challenging one and we now find ourselves facing another uphill battle to avoid relegation.

"Garry Rowett remains a fine manager and it was his impressive track record which led us to appoint him some 12 months ago. However, our view is that the decision to part company at this stage is in the best interests of the football club going forward." Rowett has previously managed Stoke City and Derby County, he has also had spells at Birmingham City and Burton Albion.

Millwall fans were involved in disturbing scenes of crowd trouble at their trip to Stoke last match. Police were forced to step in to halt the violence which broke out late in the second half. Missiles were said to have been thrown by sections of the visiting support with a number trying to cross meshing and reach the home fans before the final whistle.

@Marius@V-Traxx Dank je wel voor de reactie. Verandering is komende. Het syteem (De coach) werkte niet, dus heeft de club besloten om het op een andere manier te proberen. Meer nieuws volgt snel.
